Blue Pumpkin 11" x 14", DIY PATTERN on primitive linen, P147, Fall pumpkin project, wide cut rug hooking

$25.00

Blue Pumpkin, a rug hooking pattern, hand drawn on primitive linen. The size is 11” x 14 and will arrive ready for you to hook.

This pumpkin design is hooked using torn strips of wool so you do not need a wool cutter to hook this project.
But you WILL need a special primitive hook with a wide enough shank to make it easier to pull these wide strips through. See link below for hooks.

I hooked this primitive pattern using 1/2” torn strips of blue green and grayed blue textured wool fabrics for the pumpkin and off white texture for the border. Check out other photos where I have just hooked the pumpkin area in various colors and finished as a pillow as in the orange example or table mats like the green and white pumpkins.

If you don't own a cutter, this might be a fun way for you to try your hand at primitive rug hooking. In the olden days people tore or cut their strips by hand. Tearing is preferable because it keeps your wool piece on the straight of grain. Some textures work better with cutting than tearing. As you work with the wool you pull for this project you will get a feel for tearing or cutting. Both can be used in the project. It is hard to tear a strip much less than 1/2" wide, so the strips in this hooked version are at least 1/2" wide sometime a little wider. The look is very primitive.

I have hand drawn the design on primitive linen and serged the outside raw edges to prevent raveling while working on the project. The size of the backing fabric is about 19” x 22” which makes it fit on most rug hooking lap frames or in a 14" hoop.

Take a look at the Hartman hooks I offer in the hooking supplies section. For this project, I recommend the 9mm hooks, but the 8mm will work fine, too:

Which Backing Fabric should I choose?

Cotton Monks Cloth is 100% cotton woven with two warp threads and two weft threads has 12 x 13 holes per inch. It is great for hooking with all cuts of wool, from fine to primitive cuts. It is less expensive than primitive linen.

Primitive linen is 100% linen, the most durable backing fabric. It is more expensive than other backing fabrics. The evenly spaced weave of 12 x 12 threads per inch makes it great for all primitive cuts, #7 and wider.
Beginners usually have an easier time hooking with linen.

Both are fine and long lasting choices for the backing to support and make your hooked rug durable. I use both types, but usually choose linen for larger projects.

Do you refund shipping overage charges?

Yes, if the difference is $3.00 or more. Etsy calculations, especially on orders with multiple items, can add up to more than the actual shipping. I will let you know when your order is ready to ship if you will be receiving a shipping refund.
